Generally, "Dermal piercings are a special type of piercing in which the base of the pierce remains the skin," explains Joshua Zeichner, a New York City-based dermatologist and the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. "After the jewelry is implanted, it takes several weeks for the skin to fully heal around it.
Zeichner also points out that JB's placement is particularly worrisome because of the sensitivity of the undereye area. "Not only is the skin extremely thin, but also there are important blood vessels and nerves needed for facial expression, sensation, and vision," he adds.
